Non Photorealistic Rendering

Roberto (Carmen Córdoba shortfilm)

Though years, 2D productions have embraced 3D tools, mainly for background tasks and camera movements, to improve the process and save time and money. On the other hand, lately, there's a huge movement of NPR productions where 3D has improved its visual aspect and reaches stylized results getting its own personality and bringing a new way to see 3D animation.Non Photorealistic Rendering is, basically, avoiding realistic results in our 3D renders, in order to stylize de final look. That means that it's not strictly necessary to fake 2D, it could be just touch of style in our work. However, sometimes 3D it's so obvious in NPR animated productions that generates a new kind of Uncanny Valley, there's something not working and many people (me included) rejects it.Through the years I've been working in several tests and productions where I've tried to match an efficient and effective pipeline that blends 3D and 2D animations.

As a 3D Generalist I'm able to communicate with many departments, and one thing that I'm awarded of is that NPR productions change some aspects of our pipeline and department's workflow.
Let's think it in this way: 2D animators are modeling, rigging, texturing and yeah ... also animating things, all at the same time. While in 3D there are several departments covering all this aspects, which means different kinds of artists being involved in a single 2D animation process.
This major difference between both techniques are essential, if the main goal is to get a perfect stylized result, matching the 2D looking and avoiding this new 3D Uncanny Valley.
And it's necessary to change some things as have been done until now and create an NPR Animation Pipeline

ANIMATION

I formed my self as 3D Animator because, back in the days, I noticed that no matter how good your model or your shader is, if it has bad animation, everything falls down.Animation was the discipline that I found more difficult to learn by my self, so I finally joined the best 3D animation school in Barcelona, PepeschoolLand.

I'm a generalist, but most of my professional experience in the industry has been as 3D animator, working with clients like RIOT Games, Cocacola, Ubisoft, among others...
Becoming Lead Animator has allowded me to learn the importance of a good pipeline and fluid teamwork.
Communication between department heads is essential to achieve a final result consistent with the style you are looking for and going through this experience has helped me to devise my own pipeline for NPR animated productions.

BLENDER PROCEDURAL NPR WORKSHOP

*** 1st July workshop's vacancies are already full, next workshop will be on July 22ndI'm starting this workshop due to many comments that I've received in my YouTube tutorials, asking for a more extended version of them.
However, making video tutorials is something that doesn't fit with my personal schedule and interests.
So I think will be more interesting working in real-time with you.

The workshop is a 4 group sessions (3 hours each) in my Discord server.
- Monday (class + exercise)
- Friday (exercise feedback)

Discord server during the workshop.
Drive folder for review and feedback for a month.
Course level will be calibrated depending on user level of the group, but we will cover the basics too.

There are so many ways to reach stylized results, and it's something that you can learn by yourself or coursing workshops like this one, but in the end, doesn't matter where do you learn from, it's going to be someone else's workflow/style.The idea of this workshop is to make you understand what's going on in the process, give you tools and knowledge to start finding your own workflow/style, according to your skills and needs. We will be working in Blender, and as it is procedural, will be focused in nodes, more than painting textures, grease pencil, etc. However, we will see how to mix nodes with other techniques too.If you are interested in, you can use the contact form down below asking for more information.
